This album was recorded live on Thorn_Island*, Pembrokeshire. Later, we overdubbed the drums, with backing vocals, and some extra guitars and harmonica in the singer's house. The writer and singer of the featured track, Tim Williams can be contacted on 07977 100534
The live part of this project was recorded with a Schoeps stereo mic, fig. 8 pattern, with spot 451s on guitar, mandolin and the bass combo. The bass was also DI'd, along with the celtic harp. The mic-preamps were the nice transformer ones on my Alice 828 broadcast desk. The direct outs were connected to an adat. The venue was a big, vaulted dining-room, part of the Napoleonic fort on the island. Mains power came from a big old diesel generator, so it's on the CD as a low-level thrum, along with quite a few low-level seagulls!
The overdubbing part of the project was done in a biggish odd-shaped living room/kitchen in a square bungalow. The drums (421 on kick, 421 on floor tom and 451 overhead) were recorded from the kitchen end. The guitar combo was in the bathroom, a mix of 421 on the amp, with 451 as the ambient mic. Vocals were courtesy of a 451. The mix was recorded on two spare adat tracks, via the L/R inserts of my Soundcraft Spirit Live 4 desk. The mixes were done in sections, 'cos adats are groovy, that way.
Audio transfer to my old Macintosh 8100 was via a vintage (!) Pro Tools Interface. The editing was done with SDII. Mastering EQ by (a very nice) Neil Perry Decca passive equaliser patched to a TC mastering gizmo, to give mild multi-band compression and digital conversion. Then the CD was compiled with Adaptec's Toast . . . Et viola!
