The gear has recently been upgraded, with a FireFace 800, DAV BG 8, Mackie Onyx 1640 mixer/Firewire interface, a Mac Core 2 Duo with Logic Studio 8, and loads of nice & expensive plugins.

Microphones

  • CAD M179: Two of these flexible multi-pattern large diameter diaphragm condensers.
  • Groove Tubes GT 33: Two of these ludicrously good cardioid medium-diameter condensers.
  • Ted Fletcher TF 27: Two fast-sounding small diameter condensers
  • AKG 451:. Classic small diameter condenser.
  • AKG C-1000: Electret condenser, not at all bad for live acoustic instruments
  • SE 3 stereo pair: Medium diameter cardioid gems
  • Sennheiser 421: Three of these fine dynamic mics. Classic mic for drums.
  • Shure SM 57: Five of these dynamic mics. Good for drums, amps and instruments.
  • Shure SM 58: Five of these dynamic mics. The classic mic for live vocals.
  • Various hypercardioid dynamics, good for feedback rejection, and a warmer sound on sax and trumpet in live situations, bla bla bla
  • Any extra mic/s needed, such as super-directional types, or dedicated stereo mics, will be hired in.
Mixers and mic preamplifiers
  • Mackie Onyx mixer with integral Firewire card. This has 16 above average microphone pre-amps, directly connected to the computer, via Firewire. A very flexible desk which is great live, as well as for recording
  • Alice 828 eight channel broadcast mixer, which has cool vintage transformer mic-amps for a warm, open sound. .
  • DAV BG 8 eight channel mic preamplfier, a really clean un-coloured sound. These DAV BG preamps kepp getting great reviews – quite rightly
Computer & software
  • MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo for speed and reliability.
  • Logic Pro 8, as it is probably the best audio/midi sequencer.
  • Peak, for stereo editing mixes and samples.
  • Altiverb, a specialist plug-in for incredibly realistic reverbs and ambiences, which also re-creates most of the classic reverb units out there – digital, plate or spring.
  • Plus more specialist plug-ins, for tone control, dynamics and vintage gear emulation.
